Professor Mitsoulis, P.Eng., FCIC, was born in Athens, Greece, in 1954. He received his Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens in 1977. He then moved to Canada, where he obtained his Master's degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of New Brunswick in 1979, and his PhD degree in Chemical Engineering at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1984.
He joined the University of Ottawa as an Assistant Professor in 1984. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1989 and to Full Professor in 1994. He has spent sabbatical leaves at the Ecole des Mines de Paris, Sophia-Antipolis, France (1990-91) and at the NTUA in Athens, Greece (1991, 1994-1995). He was a visiting Professor at the Laboratoire de Rhéologie, Grenoble, France (1995).
Since 1998 is back at his Alma Mater, NTUA, where he is currently a Professor in the School of Mining Engineering and Metallurgy, Department of Metallurgy and Materials Technology.
Professor Mitsoulis has published over 340 scientific and technical papers in the areas of rheology, polymer and materials processing, and computational fluid mechanics and heat transfer. He has also published 7 chapters in books, including chapters in the Encyclopedia of Fluid Mechanics. Professor Mitsoulis is an active participant in International Conferences, Workshops and Seminars.
Professor Mitsoulis is the Director of the Computer-Aided Materials Processing - Rheology and Design (CAMP - R&D) research group and lab funded originally in Canada by NSERC and the Ontario Centre for Materials Research (OCMR), a provincial centre of excellence, in which he was a project leader. At NTUA funding is provided from University, National, and European research projects.
Professor Mitsoulis is a registered professional engineer in Greece (TEE) and in the Province of Ontario (APEO), Canada, a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers (FSPE), a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada (FCIC), member in 15 professional societies, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Society of Rheology. He is also one of the founders and the first president of the Hellenic Society of Rheology. He is listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Canadian Engineering, and Hellenic Who's Who.

Professor Mitsoulis has been involved in research pertaining to the field of computational rheology and modelling of materials processing with particular emphasis on polymer processing. To that effect he has established the Computer-Aided Materials Processing - Rheology and Design (CAMP - R&D) research group and lab.
Professor Mitsoulis's work has direct applications in the plastics industry. His models on viscoelastic behaviour of polymeric liquids are now incorporated in several commercial packages. He has also developed a series of computer software packages for use in the plastics and advanced materials industries. These include:
- MULTI-LAT for multilayer coextrusion of polymers
- LAT-ROLL for multilayer roll-coating operations of polymers
- LAT-CAL for multilayer calendering of polymers
- WIRE-LAT for multilayer wire-coating of polymers
- CAVES for viscoelastic simulations of polymer solutions and melts
- F-BLOW for viscoelastic simulations of the film-blowing process
- F-SPIN for viscoelastic simulations of the fiber-spinning process
- F-CAST for viscoelastic simulations of the film-casting process
The main current research interests of Professor Mitsoulis are:
- the analysis of plastics flow inside industrial processing equipment (such as molds, extrusion dies, etc.) to determine the influence that operating conditions (such as temperatures, pressures, stresses, etc.) have on the manufactured parts;
- the rheological characterization of commercial polymers used in industrial processes and their influence on eliminating defects under processing conditions;
- the development of software packages for use by the plastics and other advanced-materials industries (e.g., pastes, ceramics, foodstuffs, etc.).
Professor Mitsoulis has served and is willing to serve as expert witness in patent litigation, patent dispute, etc.
