Cosmic muons, generated in the upper atmosphere from cosmic particles, can penetrate up to kilometers of rock, therefore offer a unique possibility to study the internal structure of large objects. Notable examples are volcanoes all over the world, mines, caves, pyramids, CO2 storage reservoirs, and other man-made large objects. Dezso Varga is a particle physicist at the Wigner Research Centre for Physics, Budapest, with experience at fundamental science instrumentation. His research group develops various muography instruments both for underground and on-surface applications.
